Help for tariff affected businesses in Guelph and Southern Ontario

Government of Canada Launches Regional Tariff Response Initiative

Guelph is a hub of innovation and advanced manufacturing in Southern Ontario. From automotive components to steel fabrication, local industries are central to Canada’s supply chains and economic strength. These sectors support good, middle-class jobs and drive growth across the region—but they’ve felt the impact of ongoing U.S. tariffs.

To support businesses facing these challenges, the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister for the Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario, announced the launch of applications for the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) in Southern Ontario. Delivered by FedDev Ontario, RTRI will provide $450 million in targeted support to small and medium-sized businesses and organizations impacted by recent tariffs, with a particular focus on the steel and automotive sectors. This is part of a broader Government of Canada tariff response plan that includes $6.5 billion in new measures.

“Guelph is home to a dynamic and diverse manufacturing base—from automotive components to advanced materials,” said MP O’Rourke. “These industries are the backbone of our local economy, and this initiative ensures they have the supports needed to stay competitive and resilient.”

The $450 million RTRI helps businesses overcome trade disruptions and includes support for businesses in the steel and automotive industries. The program is designed to help businesses improve productivity, diversify markets, and strengthen supply chains in response to shifting global trade dynamics.

With this initiative, Canada is moving from reliance to resilience—building strength at home, opening new markets abroad, and creating real opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

"Businesses are facing an existential crisis in the face of tariffs from our largest international trading partner. Guelph is a city of innovative and strong businesses, but even the strongest businesses need support in the face of external threats,” said Andy Veilleux, Guelph Chamber of Commerce President and CEO “We welcome the Federal Government's investment in supporting our local business community as we work to create a brighter future."

“My team and I will be continuing to provide information on RTRI and other programs that can help. We’re here to listen, and support local businesses, so stay tuned,” says MP O’Rourke.

Applications are now open for the RTRI. For more information and to apply, visit: https://feddev-ontario.canada.ca/en/funding-southern-ontario/regional-tariff-response-initiative-southern-ontario
