Statement on X I Jan 21, 2026

Like you, I am very concerned about reports of non-consensual, sexualized deepfakes circulating on X/Twitter enabled by the platform’s AI tools.

This is unacceptable and possibly illegal sexual exploitation. It is sexual violence.

Just yesterday, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada announced that he is expanding his investigation into X following reports that its AI tools were used to create sexualized deepfake images without consent.

To ensure a safe online environment, my office has removed all posts that include photos of community members and we are pausing posting on X.

As your MP, a member of the women’s caucus, and a member of the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology, I will work towards safer online platforms

also fully support Bill C-16, which will criminalize the distribution of non-consensual deepfake sexual images

My colleague, MP Will Greaves, said it very well “Social media platforms, AI developers, and corporations that profit from attention have a duty to prevent harm, not amplify it.”

We must all call on social media platforms to strengthen their safeguards, prioritize user safety, and uphold community standards that protect people—especially youth—from harmful and inappropriate content.

You can find all updates from my office on our official website, on Facebook and Instagram and via news releases. The best way to reach me or my team is, of course, always through my constituency office.
