Guelph MP encourages local input on housing recommendations

Guelph, ON – August 12, 2025

The housing crisis is an important, persistent and challenging issue in Guelph and across Canada. That’s why the Government of Canada is using every tool at its disposal to take strong action. Build Canada Homes, a new federal organization, will be key to the government's response to housing challenges across the country. It will build affordable homes, support builders with financing, and encourage better building methods.

Working collaboratively, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, along with its partners, are tackling the housing crisis. This includes exploring policy levers that bolster housing supply; work with market, non-profit and community housing providers to build new affordable housing; and partner with provinces, territories, Indigenous and local governments to address a range of housing challenges.

“Guelph knows the value of working collaboratively and we’ve already made progress with supportive and affordable housing projects funded in part by the federal government,” said Guelph MP Dominique O’Rourke. “Projects like 10 Shelldale, Grace Gardens, the Silver Maples Seniors Community are already in place. I’m looking forward to the new units on Edinburgh which are supported by the Housing Accelerator Fund and to new projects and innovations.”

Acknowledging the importance of on-the-ground knowledge, Housing, Infrastructures and Communities Canada (HICC) wants to hear from partners and stakeholders to refine the approach to Build Canada Homes. The goal is to identify the tools and opportunities with the largest impact for Canadians.

MP O’Rourke is inviting local organizations, co-ops, builders and interested parties to share their insights and recommendations on Build Canada Homes’ design by August 29, 2025, [email protected].
