| Helping businesses navigate U.S. tariffs
We’re standing up for Canadian sovereignty, our economy and our workers – today and always. In response to ongoing illegal and unjustified U.S. tariffs, the Government of Canada has a number of programs to support tariff-affected sectors. These include large liquidity loans for sectors like steel and aluminium, Strategic Response Funding for larger businesses, and Regional Tariff Relief that has already flowed to several Guelph businesses helping them diversify or strengthen their operations. The Business Development Bank of Canada is providing working capital to businesses facing cash-flow shortfalls and consulting services to help them pivot. There are new workshare programs for employers, retraining, and broader EI supports if they are needed. Please contact my office if your business needs help. More importantly we are investing in ourselves. From major projects to infrastructure, from Build Canada Homes to an ambitious electrification strategy and revitalising our defense sector. We are diversifying our trade relationships. We’re buying Canadian and we are building Canada Strong. With labour day just a few days ago, it’s timely to say: Guelph and Canada have some of the best workers in the world and we’re training more. That’s why Minister of Jobs and Families, Hon Patty Hajdu, was in Guelph a few weeks ago to announce the launch of Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Alliance. We’re also investing $8 billion in the Team Canada Strong initiative to recruit, train and certify up to 100,000 skilled trades workers by 2031. We’re going to work together to innovate, to protect jobs, strengthen supply chains, diversify markets, and build a more resilient economy. P.S. Please contact my office if you need a Canadian flag pin. They’re free! |
| Largest-Ever VIA Rail Investment Supports Jobs and Manufacturing
The Government of Canada is making the largest investment in VIA Rail’s history, committing more than $6.6 billion to renew Canada’s passenger rail fleet and bring passenger rail car manufacturing back to Canada for the first time in 40 years. This will support thousands of jobs, strengthen Canada’s manufacturing and engineering sectors, and generate an estimated $2.26 billion in economic benefits. The new fleet will also help ensure reliable passenger rail service for communities across the country. For more information, click here! Fuel Tax Relief Extended to Help Lower Costs for Canadians The Government of Canada is extending the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 31, 2027, followed by a reduced 50% rate through March 31, 2027. As the Iran war has been driving up fuel prices around the world, this helps lower the cost of gasoline by 10 cents/litre, providing savings for families and businesses alike to help ease everyday expenses and support economic growth. There’s a little more relief in sight mid-September to early October when winter-blend gas returns to the pumps. The winter blend is cheaper to produce because it contains more butane, which is better for cold-weather starts. That often leads to a modest drop in pump prices once the switch occurs. Helping More Ontario Students Access Healthy Meals at School It’s back to school, and the National School Food Program is helping more children access nutritious meals at school while making life more affordable for families. The federal government has doubled funding for school food programs to $140 million annually, helping provide meals to up to 400,000 more children each year. Families with two school-aged children can save an estimated $800 annually on grocery costs, while the program’s permanent status ensures long-term support for students, families, and communities. Participate in the development of Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy Today, the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature and Minister responsible for the Canada Water Agency (CWA), announced the launch of public engagement to develop Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy. The survey is open from September 9 to October 25, 2026. As a groundwater community, I know this strategy will be important to Guelph. Minister Dabrusin also announced an investment of $6.6 million in 31 partner-led projects to target the most significant environmental challenges affecting water quality and ecosystem health in the Great Lakes. This is in addition to nearly $6.5 million over four years, starting in 2024-2025, in dedicated funding to the Chiefs of Ontario and Anishinabek Nation to support First Nations’ participation in Great Lakes governance, science, and stewardship. |

Connecting with Local Businesses This week, I met with several local businesses and community organizations, including Valcom Manufacturing Group and Boundless Accelerator to hear firsthand about the opportunities and challenges local businesses are facing. Our conversations focused on trade diversification, innovation, and access to federal programs that support growth and expansion. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their insights and perspectives with me. Hearing directly from local employers and entrepreneurs helps inform my work on behalf of our community. Guelph and District Labour Council Picnic The Guelph and District Labour Council’s annual Labour Day Picnic, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. It was great to connect with workers and community members from across Guelph. Thank you to the Guelph and District Labour Council for organizing this event to listen, learn, and celebrate our community together. |
