MP O’Rourke meets Guelph youth to hear their ideas and priorities
Guelph, ON — January 13, 2026
Guelph MP Dominique O’Rourke hosted the second meeting of her Guelph Federal Youth Council this evening at her new constituency office, bringing together local youth, ages 17-24, to discuss priorities and opportunities for engagement in federal initiatives.
Opening the meeting, MP O’Rourke welcomed members back and highlighted the importance of creating a consistent space for dialogue. “Young people are not just future leaders—they are already contributing thoughtful, informed perspectives to the challenges we face today,” said MP O’Rourke. “This council exists to ensure those perspectives directly inform my work in Parliament and in our community.”
During the meeting, members participated in an open forum to share the issues most important to them, with discussions reflecting a wide range of priorities, including housing, national defence, and Canadian sovereignty. MP O’Rourke highlighted current federal actions related to these issues and listened to youth perspectives on how government efforts can be strengthened.
The discussion also focused on how youth input can translate into tangible impact. MP O’Rourke highlighted how ideas raised through the council are already helping to inform her work on parliamentary committees and within caucus, contribute to local initiatives, and shape broader policy conversations.
For Sophie Le, a member of the Federal Youth Council, the the GFYC serves as a platform where she can voice issues that matter most to her. “I have always known [nature] is important, but I don’t always have room in my day to day,”they said. “can understand what others care about and share what I care about […] and make connections with others who are passionate.”
The second half of the meeting featured a consultation on Canada’s Nature Strategy, during which MP O’Rourke listened as council members shared their perspectives on environmental protection and the role of youth in addressing climate challenges. The advice and feedback provided through this discussion will help inform future government decisions, environment caucus conversations, and ensure policies better reflect the needs, priorities, and ambitions of local youth.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on youth opportunities, including an overview of federal jobs, programs, and leadership initiatives available to young people. MP O’Rourke emphasized the importance of ensuring youth are aware of—and able to access—these opportunities as part of a broader effort to strengthen civic participation and economic inclusion.
The Guelph Federal Youth Council will continue to meet regularly, providing an ongoing forum for youth to engage directly with their Member of Parliament and contribute to federal policy discussions.
